The route
Out of London it’s the M20 or M2 to Dover or the Eurotunnel at Folkestone, across the Channel, and then a long, planned drive south — the A26 through northern France and the A6 down the Rhône towards Lyon. From there we cross the Alps, usually the Mont Blanc or Fréjus tunnel, or the Swiss side and the Gotthard, before dropping into the Italian autostrada network: the A5 down from Aosta and the A4 running east and west across the north. We plan the crossing, the mountain leg and the last approach — narrow hill-town lanes and ZTL historic-centre limits are real delivery realities we sort out before we set off.
